Richard Flenaghan « A Narrow Path to the Distant North»

Several words about the authors should be said, for you to understand why the situation is so realistic. To predict the future of a child from the sixth kids family, the condemned Irish, sometimes can be not so easy. So thats why the fate of Richard Flenaghan can’t be called a typical one,who became one of the best graduates of the university of Tasmania, the owner of the « Rhodes Scholarship» of the Oxford university, tried himself as a journalist,a writer and director. He had worked over the novel « A Narrow Path to the Distant North» for almost 12 years and had taken as a basis of it his father’s life: during the WW2 Flenaghan senior got into captivity to the Japanese, where he with the other prisoners of war he built railway tracks between Birma and Thailand, which was called a «Road of Death». We won’t tell you the plot of a story, just will mention that it isn’t created in a line, and that Dorrigo Evans, the main character of the novel, will be depicted during the different periods of his life. Due to Flenaghan and his characters the reader is again faced to overthinking about the fears of war, about the loss of a majesty of a big nation, about the ruination of the cultural traditions and the person’s responsibility for the situation. The story can not be considered as a novel about war, it is a deep overviewing through the eyes of the main character which is made mostly by the East people, the one who will be saved by the well known values: love to the family and to the job, which give you enjoying moments. « A Narrow Path to the Distant North»- is a first book by Richard Flenaghan translated into Ukrainian.

Kadzyo Ishigyro « A Burried Giant»

It is a classical dystopia during the times of the Deep Medieval times in England- an idyll with dragons and ogres during the times after the King Arthur’s death. An immersion into the Middle Ages gave the author sn opportunity to create a story-parable about the evil of war, despite the fact when and where it has taken place. Despite the combination of different techniques, on the mystical-fantastical basis the author creates an extremely modern world of forgetting the Main Sense: just have a look at the characters, a couple Axel and Beatrice, who under the cursed breath of she-dragon Querique got rid of their past- social and personal. While we observe just a fantastic story of a family, who live their life, not always understanding a majesty of History, we become aware, that the knowledge and memory- is always a responsibility, and even a pain. They are needed not for the fixation of the events in time, but for the analysis and making the humanistic decisions, that do not repeat the cycle of the violence. For those who are keen on philosophical proze,a novel « A Burried Giant»- is a sample of the filigree skills in drawing unexpected historical parallels, and for the mean realists- the analogies and the typical features of the existence of the totalitarian regimes. There is no much action in the book, but there lots of good old Great Britain. And also the thoughts about the violence of the war, which will follow its victims through the years and distances…

Dave Eggers «The Sphere»

For the workers of the private company « Sphere» a digital world is a useful and comfortable thing. And what if this usefulness will lead to the «absolute»? A total control, a loss of the personality, strange relations between the private company and the country, and lots of those, that need at least some explanation. «The Sphere» is a novel-warning ,in which comfortable and useful options can seem as a danger. The main characters of the book- are the workers of the company, young and ambitious people, whose searching for the sense of life had just started. What can become the end of these searchings and what dangers they will face,we will find out while reading a book. Excluding the technical reality and actuality, a text is interesting in its deep philosophical content and the images, which seem so common and even resemble ourselves. After reading this very text, you will surely overthink your activity in the social networking sites, and the measures of the openess of the personal space. By the way,the book was screened, and there starred Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. Though the film is quite good,we recommend you to read the book,as the writer and the director of the film not always have a common view. Did it really happen to «The Sphere»? The answer after reading of the dystopia «The Sphere».
