“Based on real events” is an additional bonus that stimulates viewer`s interest. Real events happen around us, with ourselves, with people we know personally, or with “stars” we always want to know more about. In real life, unfortunately, many events remain behind the scenes, and only in the movies you can see everything “in color”, get to know yourself in one of the characters or realize the lessons that history gives us. Here are five unique films based on real life events

The Dig (2021)
This film is not about adventure archeology in the style of Indiana Jones or Lara Croft.
There was a widow in the English county of Suffolk,Edith Pritt, who bought a field with strange mounds. Educated and inquisitive, she was convinced that beneath them were the burials of the early Middle Ages, perhaps even the Vikings. She asked local archaeologist Basil Brown to help with the search. When scientists and museologists realized that this was a real historical treasure of Britain, the late antique period, that is, their own, not “imported” by the conquerors of antiquity, they joined a team of professional archaeologists. The discovery was a sensation, but the real heroes of the excavations were long forgotten, because their names were not loud. It’s not just about Basil Brown, but also about the young archaeologist Peggy Pigott (born Margaret Preston). Unfortunately, the role in the work in the Sutton Hoo necropolis has not been properly assessed for a long time. The film received five nominations from the British Film Academy, including the nomination “Best Outstanding British Film of the Year”.

Operation Finale (2018)
Adolf Eichmann is a German officer, Gestapo officer, and head of Division IV-B-4. He was responsible for the “final settlement of the Jewish question” and was one of those Nazi commanders who were directly involved in the Holocaust. However, at the end of the war, Eichmann and his family managed to escape to Argentina and work under a false name as an accountant at a branch of the Mercedes-Benz plant. But war criminals should never live in peace. Israeli intelligence service has conducted a brilliant operation to abduct Eichmann and deliver him to Jerusalem. If the audience knew how difficult it was in the conditions of active opposition of the Argentine government to the extradition of former Nazis! In 1960, Eichmann was tried in public for witnesses to the atrocities. The conviction is the death penalty. But do we, the people of the 21st century, fully understand the danger of the revival of fascism? After all, anyone can be “not like everyone else.” Even you.

The Ruthless (2019)
In the 1960s, many Italians from the poor south of the country moved to the industrial centers of the North, but not all managed to adapt. The young and ambitious Santo Rousseau started working for the Calabrian mafia in Milan early on. He was not the richest or most famous, but he was certainly the most ruthless.
Money, drugs, contract killings and many enemies. How does a young rebel from a poor but decent family turn into a brutal bandit? Beyond the script, there is the true story of Saverio Morabito, a mafioso who was arrested in 1990. During his imprisonment, he began cooperating with the police, which allowed police to neutralize a large part of the mafia clans. But the retribution for cooperation with the cops was someone else’s life – under someone else’s name, in a foreign country. Did the hero feel remorse? Scarcely, but he definitely shouldn’t relax wherever he would be.

Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Memoirs of venture investor James Vance “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” became a literary discovery of 2016, a bestseller. Subsequently, the work was screened. Elegy as a genre is a mournful song. Of course, the harsh inhabitants of a remote Appalachian place among the hills of Ohio have many reasons to be sad: unemployment, lack of money and hopelessness. They get drunk and fight – they lose their temper.
Jay Dee was born in a such ordinary family. Nothing foreshadowed him a college, a Yale school of law, or a successful career. Only one circumstance helped him to orient himself in time: he was believed. Of course, not everyone, but usually one adult who believes, can be enough in a child’s life.
While watching, you may get the feeling that we all live in one big Ohio, where it is so difficult to get to your dream. However, this film is an example of healthy optimism.

Notes for my son / El Cuaderno de Tomy (2020)
Are there good times to watch cancer movies? Hardly ever. It always hurts, but immersion in such stories is an occasion to reconsider priorities, an opportunity to ask yourself: “Am I a delusion?” It is these thoughts that lead to decisions that improve lives. The film is based on the true story of Maria Velazquez, a woman from Argentina, who, learning about the incurability of the disease, begins to honestly talk about their thoughts and the course of therapy on Twitter, and later creates a notebook for her young son. There she writes about what, in her opinion, is the most important thing in life – love, honesty, pain: “Everything feels brighter when you die soon. You want to feel, taste and love”. After watching the film, you want to hug your loved ones and tell them about your true feelings, review your work schedule and make room for what is really important.

Films are based on real facts not only encourage us to study history, but also make us think about what kind of history we will leave behind.
