What is it like, Halloween?
Halloween is a “frightening” holiday celebrated every year on the eve of the Western Christian holiday of the Day of All Saints. The Americanized Halloween that we are experiencing today, originates in the Celtic neighborhoods of Britain. Some believe that the holiday comes from the Celtic pagan festival Samhain, which means “End of the Summer.” It was believed that at this time the walls between the real world and the other side become thin and allow the spirits of the dead to penetrate our world and harm the harvest. Therefore, people were preparing places at the dinner table to congratulate the spirits and please them, spread the table with food and drink, and fired the fire.
Where are the costumes?
The origins of the focus with dressing up to the 16th century, in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, where people wandered from door to door in costumes, giving themselves up for spirits, asking for food in exchange for a poem or song. The phrase “Trick-or-treating” was first made in America in 1927, so that “terrible guests” could have received sweets. Under the influence of Gothic themes in the literature costumes became more adventurous over time: many dressed as a bitch or a ghost. Under the influence of pop culture, dresses transformed and became more playful.
Why translate pumpkin?
Pumpkin cutters originate from the Samhain Festival when decorated with turnips to stop the perfume from penetrating into the home. The influx of Irish immigrants into North America in the 18th century replaced the turnip with a more accessible pumpkin, in which they cut out scary faces. Now pumpkin carvings – must have Halloween, like horrible outfits and tricks with sweets.
Surprisingly, but a fact
For Czechs and Slovaks, on the night of Halloween chairs for each deceased member of the family are placed near the fire, with chairs for everyone living. In Austria, some people leave bread, water and a lamp on the table before bed, hoping that it will turn dead souls back to Earth. In Germany people hide knives, so as not to damage the spirits that return.
