It is difficult to imagine a full life without health, that’s why the holiday of a medical worker in June is a good opportunity to greet people who help us to be healthy. Now medicine is a high-tech industry, but also a responsible attitude to work, empathy and the desire to help people remain a priority for real doctors. These people developed medicine as a science, sometimes even risking their own lives. We decided to tell some interesting facts from the history of medicine. And of course to greet the representatives of one of the noblest professions in human history
Fact 1 Probably no secret that «the father medicine» is supposed to be Hypocrates. Exactly he stressed that the cause of all diseases is fat, and offered an important method of treatment -starvation. Of course, times have changed, but the method still remains relevant. Only now more often doctors call it diet.
Fact 2 Werner Forsmann, a German surgeon, in 1929 year through the ulnar vein in the right atrium entered catheter. He did this procedure on himself. And,of course, without anesthesia. This was not the only way when the man tested the methods of catheterization on himself. Such courage is worth the reward, and in 1956, for his research, the surgeon received the Nobel Prize.
Fact 3 Probably each of us is afraid of something. One of quite common fears – a snake bite. But now it is no longer fatal if doctors have an antisnake serum. Its developer Swiss doctor Jacques Ponto tested the medicine in action: he allowed the snakes bite himself three times. The doctor not only survived all these times,he created a drug that saved the lives of many people.
Fact 4 Have you ever wondered what was a prototype of the device called a «cardiograph», which indispensable for diagnosing of heart diseases? In 1887 he was one of the employees of the London hospital watched a small children’s toy by rail. Then he thought of the project cardiograph. This idea came at a time when a doctor placed on the toy platform a movable photoplate. The plate had to register the heart rhythm, but at that time due to low sensitivity elements of the device could not be used in medical practice.
Fact 5 The symbol of medicine is a snake that winds around bowl. History takes us to the ancient Greek god Asclepius, who was responsible for treatment. What is interesting, the US and Western medical facilities use a symbol that looks very similar, but it depicts two curly snakes, and they symbolize the scepter of the ancient Greek god of trade Hermes.
We use the results of dedicated work of scientists and doctors, often without thinking about the efforts they made to achieve this. Today for those who work in the medical field, we wish inspiration for new achievements and of course health!
