Football… A game of millions that has become a way of life for many. We rejoice in victories and steadfastly accept defeats together with the players of our favorite clubs. In Ukraine, sports traditions are respected and, despite all the troubles, new winners are growing. For us, football has long been more than just a sporting event. Therefore, on the World Football Day, founded at the initiative of the UN, we collected the TOP outstanding facts about our Ukrainian football
During the Soviet era, the Kyiv club Dynamo has won the championship 13 times since 1961. That same year, Shakhtar Donetsk brought home the USSR Cup. In 1975, Dynamo Kyiv was the first Soviet club to win a European trophy – the Cup Winners’ Cup, and soon the UEFA Super Cup.
In 1986, under the leadership of Valeriy Lobanovsky, the USSR team defeated the Hungarians 6-0 at the World Cup in Mexico and won silver medals at the European Championships in 1988.
Ukrainian football is three Golden Balls awarded to the best player in the world in the hands of Ukrainian footballers: Oleh Blokhin (1975), Ihor Belanov (1986) and Andriy Shevchenko (2004).
Ukrainian football is a powerful football club, such as Shakhtar, Dynamo, Zorya and many others, which are successfully fighting for the World Cup. These are the successes of our National Team: reaching the ¼ finals of the World Cup in 2006 and winning a ticket to Euro 2020 ahead of schedule. Coach Andriy Shevchenko managed to create a new team with a completely new football philosophy and a new game.
