Some of the structures or sights we have become accustomed to since childhood have become symbolic. Take fountains, for example. The unity of fantasy, the brilliance of opportunities, the embodiment of dreams and necessarily an interesting story. Monuments that stand for centuries are almost always a story of love, modern creations – a hymn to the latest technology and the human mind. Our fountains may go as far as the legendary King Fahd’s Fountain in Jeddah or the Crown Fountainy y Chicago, but they are our
Cascade fountain on Stary Boulevard was commissioned in 1980. By the beginning of the Olympics-80 the city was carefully decorated. Then to strengthen the Zhytomyr city planners came Kiev Institute «Prograd», which was engaged in the reconstruction of the Stary Boulevard. Zhytomyr architects A. Zelensky and N. Ivanchuk participated in the work, and for their performance received one of the highest awards – they became winners of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of architecture. Through the peak, the fountain will be celebrating its 40th anniversary, but it is unknown who exactly designed it. Once upon a time, seven water cascades were even decorated with the color illumination, which is usually far from modern multimedia designs, but the authors’ intention is to decorate the holiday – perfectly embodied.
The Cosmonaut Fountain on Vitruk Street, which was built in 1984 until the 1100th anniversary of the city, is being renovated again. The author of the project Vitaliy Sivko and the Kiev company «Empire of Water» have planned the construction of a brighter version of the fountain. In the complete set of light and water effects with musical accompaniment, Zhytomyr citizens will receive a new fountain decoration – the space will be laid out with paving stones, they will equip bicycle parks and equip barrier free space. From the history of the fountain, one can only recall that in 2012, one reconstruction had already taken place, though it was less ambitious.
The fountain at Mukhailivska street is pleasing both children and adults. Perhaps because its history is a manifestation of respect and love for the city where you live. Initially, the Italian Verginio Fidanso, for whom Zhytomyr became almost native, decided to allocate funds for medical equipment for Zhytomyr hospitals, which he wrote in a will. But later he changed his mind and wanted to give 50,000 euros to build a fountain. Verginio himself thinks it is a small gift, and as he plans to «go on together for many more years», he is ready to help the city even more.
The fountain season is almost over, but we will not once again have time to thank the people who made Zhytomyr beautiful and cozy.
